What Is a QR Code?

A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores text as a grid of black and white squares. Unlike a traditional one-dimensional barcode, which can only hold a short numeric or alphanumeric string read in a single direction, a QR code reads in both directions at once, which lets it pack far more information — a full web address, a block of text, or a formatted contact card — into a small, easily printable square. Nearly every modern smartphone camera can read one without a separate app, which is why QR codes have become common on packaging, posters, restaurant menus, event tickets, and business cards.

Three larger squares in three of the code's four corners, called finder patterns, let a scanner quickly detect the code's position and orientation, even if it's photographed at an angle. Smaller alignment and timing patterns correct for any remaining distortion. The rest of the grid encodes the actual data together with error-correction information, using a scheme (Reed–Solomon coding) that allows the code to still be read even if a portion of it is damaged, dirty, or obscured — which is exactly what the error-correction level setting above controls.

Because the content is encoded directly into the pattern of squares, a QR code generated by any compliant tool, including this one, works with any standard QR scanner. There's no proprietary format, no tracking layer, and no dependency on a particular app or company staying online.

01What can I encode in a QR code with this tool?

Any text up to a few thousand characters, including full URLs, plain messages, phone numbers, or a formatted Wi-Fi string. The more text you encode, the denser (and harder to scan from a distance) the resulting code becomes, so short, direct text — especially a shortened URL — scans most reliably.

02What does the error correction level do?

QR codes include built-in redundancy so they still scan even if part of the code is dirty, scratched, or covered (for example by a logo). Level L keeps the code smallest but tolerates the least damage; level H can recover from roughly 30% of the code being unreadable but produces a denser pattern. Level M is a reasonable default for most uses.

03Can I use the downloaded QR code for printing?

Yes. The PNG is generated at the pixel size you choose, with no compression artifacts since it's drawn directly to a canvas as flat black-and-white (or custom-colored) squares. For print, choose a larger size so it stays crisp, and leave a plain white margin (a "quiet zone") around it so scanners can find its edges.

04Will the QR code still work if I change its colors?

It can, but scanners need enough contrast between the foreground and background to read it reliably. Dark foreground on a light background (or vice versa) works best; two similar mid-tone colors may fail to scan on some cameras even though they look fine on screen.

05Does the code expire or stop working?

No. Unlike some third-party "dynamic" QR services, this generates a static code with your content encoded directly into it. It has no expiry and needs no account — it will keep working for as long as the content it points to (like a URL) remains valid.
